Serumwerk Bernburg AG has concentrated more in recent years on the development of highly innovative products of prime importance internationally which can be marketed jointly with selected partners.


Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) with variable molecular parameters

For the first time, Serumwerk Bernburg AG has used local potato starch and not, as previously, waxy maize starch to produce HES. Therefore the production process was completely redeveloped in the middle of the 1990s. In parallel, scientists of the company have been working constantly on improving this active ingredient. One result of this development work, for example is Vitafusal®6%, a HES 130/0.42 with physiological Ringer’s acetate as the carrier solution. It is used for volume replacement in case of high blood losses. A further innovative area of research and development is the use of the polyglucane matrix as a polymer carrier for other medicines. The company also has special experience in the modification of peptides and the subsequent purification and testing procedures.


Iron dextran heptonic acid complex and dextrans

This special iron complex is the result of continuous research and development for more than 40 years. Starting from the 2% iron dextran, improving quality and complex stability all the time today Serumwerk Bernburg AG is producing highly concentrated iron preparations for injections and oral application (Ursoferran® 200 mg/ml per inj. and Ursoferran® 100 mg/ml per inj. or Ursoferran® 150 mg/ml per os), which are used for the prevention and therapy of anaemia of suckling piglets. These top-quality products are both highly effective and very well tolerated.


Polymer ingredients

For decades, Serumwerk Bernburg AG has been acquiring special experience in the manufacture of high-molecular polyglucane based substances. We are offering this particular research and development expertise to our partners and customers for new, original active and secondary ingredients in this product category. In addition to hydroxyethyl starches of varying substitution and molecular weight distribution and special dextran variants (DEAE dextran), other polymers such as polysucrose belong to the products that we develop and manufacture.
